Practise

Instead of struggling with each other, testing if the technique will work, as Uke, the attacker we should try to be as honest and relaxed as possible, trying always to be in the best position as the technique is applied. As Tori, the defender we should be questioning our technique: are we in the best position? did we try to hard to perform the technique?

Tori should never take anything when performing technique, but by giving something new Uke will be defeated. Try to remember, your partner is not someone to compete against, rather someone to train and improve with.

Seniors should assist lower grades by leading them through the movement in order to assist in the correct understanding of the technique. As the student progresses, senior grades should attack in a more focused and precise way.

Practising this way leads to a fluid technique, with Uke reacting to Tori's movement. This could, for example, be giving Uke an invitation for a second attack.

Practise should leave both Uke and Tori feeling good, both should be in harmony. Using pain to complete a technique is not wrong and sometimes it is required, but using pain continuously to execute techniques could result in permanent damage to our bodies. Remember Uke only lends his or her body for you to practice on, and it is their go next!
